We grow 29 different varieties of apples that all have their own unique flavor; Golden Delicious to Fuji, Mutsu to Law Rome. All of the apples are grown, hand-picked, washed and graded by us in the hills of Southern Ohio. We start selling apples mid-August depending on the weather and we finish picking our last variety in November. Apples will be available for purchase from August-January and we pick a new variety each week. We suggest that everyone have 3 favorite apple varieties; early season Aug-Sept, mid-season Sept-Oct and end-season Oct-Dec. We would love for you and your family to experience the different flavors of apples and expand beyond the “Yellow, Red and Green” mindset. If you would like to taste test the different apple varieties (free), just ask when you are visiting the orchard in Wheelersburg, Ohio.
All apples are good for eating out of hand, for cooking and for baking, but some varieties work better than others for pies & apple butter. In order to keep apples crisp you must refrigerate them, as this slows down the ripening process of starch turning into sugar. The best thing for customers to do is to take home the amount of apples they can keep refrigerated then come back for more in another 2-3 weeks. Some customers come back weekly and buy a different variety each time. While it is difficult to know the likes of each customer, we supply this following chart to try to help you out. (LINK FOR THE CHART)
Apples are sorted into #1 Fancy Grade, #2 Utility Grade (smaller apple), Ciders, and Deer/Livestock. We sell our apples in various size bags; 3lb, 5lb, 10lb Peck, 20lb Half-Bushel, 40lb Bushel, and Ciders by the bin (18 bushel). You can purchase our apples at the orchard in Wheelersburg, OH Monday-Friday 8am-6pm and Saturday 8am-5pm, at farmers markets (Portsmouth, OH and Ashland, KY), The Wild Ramp in Huntington, WV, and at Minford IGA & Westside IGA.
